My Baby Just Cares for Me

Kerry, our drummer, suggested we cover “My Baby Just Cares for Me” by Nina Simone. He sent us an animated video for the song.
The song is a jazz standard written by Walter Donaldson (“Makin’ Whoopee”) and Gus Kahn (EVO also covers Gus Kahn’s “Dream and Little Dream of Me”).
The song was an obscure track on Nina Simone’s debut album in 1958. It was revived in 1987 when Chanel 5 used in a commercial (directed by Ridley Scott). That same year Aardman Animation, who use claymation for their animation and who also gave us Wallace and Gromit, released it as a video and it crawled to number 5 on the British charts. It became one of Simone’s biggest hits.

The song goes back to the 1920s. Eddie Cantor sang it in the movie “Whoppee” in ‘black face”.

It is worth checking out Nina Simone’s other songs.
I first heard “Don’t Let me be Misunderstood” by the Animals in 1965 but she had recorded it the year earlier and it is a great version.

“Sinnerman” is her version of an old spiritual.
